Bausch & Lomb's goal with their Optics Center was to create an environment sensitive to the "human factor" within which research staff could interact and collaborate under pleasant and efficient working conditions. This goal was in part accomplished through open, well-lighted laboratories designed on a modular basis. The lab modules grouped into units enable researchers to arrange their work spaces to best suit their current functional needs while providing adaptability for future change.

Research efforts are focused on Optical, Pharmaceutical, Analytical Chemistry, New Technology and Product Research, Microbiology, Metrology, Materials Research, Chromatography, Polymer Synthesis, Lens Testing, Biology and Pilot Plants. In addition, the facility utilizes Class 1,000 and 10,000 Clean Rooms and Scanning Electron Microscope Rooms.
