Building 4 was developed as a portion of Phase I of the Chiron Corporation Emeryville Campus Expansion Project, resulting from a Master Plan which eventually will encompass 2.2 million square feet.

This five story building provides new research laboratories, specialty laboratory/process development areas, office and support space.  A central atrium and enclosed courtyard provide areas for social interaction and supply internal daylight to laboratory wings/clusters situated on east and west building zones.

Floors two through four house research laboratory and laboratory support space. Research laboratories have been designed around chemistry, biochemistry and microbiology with 12 and 16 stations per laboratory, in four module laboratory configurations. These groupings comprise the laboratory block in each wing on each floor. Each grouping is centered around the core facilities that provide laboratory support for such activities as tissue culture, media preparation, environmental rooms, common equipment and instrumentation. Major laboratory support spaces, located at the Podium Level, includes Freezer Morgues for low temperature and LN2 freezers, a 750 MHz NMR, general storage, chemical and isotope storage (new and waste), and materials management. A Specialty Laboratory Zone, located at the core of this floor, provides space for special laboratory uses, i.e., process development/pilot plant operations, and a vivarium.
