R & D Magazine's
2004 Laboratory of the Year High Honors Working under a new organizational model, FDA staff functions such as field inspectors, lab investigators, and compliance officers are now highly integrated due to workload demands. Consequently, a major planning goal was to eliminate barriers between individual offices and between adjacent lab modules. Budget restrictions resulted in a three‑phase plan for completion of this project. Both office and laboratory areas are designed as open as possible with the exception of certain functional elements such as environmentally controlled rooms which are grouped at the ends of the wings as are non‑lab elements like conference rooms and a few private offices. Distinct paths of circulation are organized in order to minimize any impact on work activities and, due to the nature of research, material and equipment circulation between lab and non‑lab areas are clearly segregated. Laboratories are designed to support a variety of operations including Food Chemistry, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Medical Device Engineering, Entomology, Drug Laboratory, Pesticides, and general research. Instrumentation utilized encompasses HPLC, GC/MS, and a Mass Spectrometry Service Center. Specialized areas were designed for an insectary and tissue culture. |
