2004 Laboratory of the Year Special Mention

This one-story facility serves law enforcement agencies for 22 cities in Northern California. Labs provide space for analysis of DNA; blood, drug and trace evidence, and firearms analysis evidence. This project has achieved silver-level LEED status and was honored by the AIA’s Committee on the Environment as a “Top 10 Green Project of 2003.”

This facility provides lab, lab support and office space for the Physical Unit, Fire Arms, Trace, Biological Unit, Toxicological Unit, Forensics Unit, Evidence Management and Storage and Secure Evidence Storage. Specific lab and support functions will include Microscopy, Shared Instrument lab, Gun Storage, Ammo Storage, Ballistics Testing, Catch Tank, Car Exam Bay, PCR Lab, and Fingerprint Examination.

Along with other environmental and sustainable elements of the architecture, the labs use a flexible design, energy-efficient fume hoods and HVAC systems, and recycled building materials, such as lab casework constructed of certified wood with epoxy resin tops.
