Supporting Kaiser's Medical Centers and Clinics in Southern California, the Regional Reference Laboratory operates as the central hub for clinical laboratory services and replaced crowded, unpleasant conditions in two older reference facilities.  Prior to the design effort, EWA's services were also utilized by Kaiser Permanente to prepare a detailed inventory of their clinical laboratory equipment. Kaiser utilized this data to organize move-in procedures for the new facility and to estimate future laboratory equipment costs.

Technical areas support the departments of Bacteriology, Immuno-Serology, Virology, Chemistry, Histopathology, and Special Chemistry. Additional building components include a Solutions and Reagent Prep Lab, Dark Room, Cold Rooms, Electron Microscope Suite, Sample Receiving and Distribution, Materials Management Area, Computer Labs, Offices, and a Conference Room. The facility maximizes the use of natural daylight and "open" laboratories whenever functionally possible to create a safe, efficient, and pleasant working environment for a projected 550 person staff.
