Indisputably one of the most significant healthcare facilities in the world, NIH has a tradition of quickly moving scientific findings into mainstream medical practice. The design of the new Clinical Research Center (CRC) posed many challenges. The goals were to create a technologically advanced yet humane environment sensitive to both research and patient care, develop a facility with long term flexibility between patient care and research space, and establish clear functional relationships between the old three million square foot Clinical Center and the new CRC.

The CRC project encompasses a replacement 250-bed inpatient hospital, a 100-station day hospital, and relocating select laboratories located in Building 10, the old Clinical Center Building. The laboratories relocated to the new CRC are those most closely involved in clinical trials and protocols. This project represents the first phase in the development of new laboratories for the NIH. Major portions of Building 10 will be vacated with the completion of this new facility allowing for a multi-phased project to renovate the old building.
